Cortenstaal L-profielen vormen onder invloed van het weer een dichte oxidehuid (patina). Deze laag beschermt het dieper liggende materiaal tegen corrosie en geeft het staal zijn unieke, warmbruine kleur.

Bij levering kan het profiel nog grijs zijn. Het volledige roestproces duurt enkele weken tot maanden. Let op: tijdens de beginfase kan het staal roestwater afgeven; vermijd direct contact met poreuze, lichte ondergronden.
